It shows the different categories of municipality in the province, how they are arranged, and the estimated population of each in 2001 and 2007. Also listed are the local municipalities that are outside the boundaries of Gauteng, but adjoin the boundaries of the province, or which cover major economic nodes within 175 kilometres of the centre of Johannesburg and are regarded as anchoring the polycentric Gauteng city-region.
